Shouldn't there be some linking to the Mardi Gras celebrations as well or are these distinct from that?

I'm unaware of any connection. I believe these have a common Celtic ancestry, and probably go back much further (there are similarities to Greek sacrificial ceremonies). If you know f any connection, do please tell me!
