We aim to please.
The only thing which vexes me slightly is that the original entry ends with the words "I love mine." Now I KNOW that that is in the first person, and Guide entries are supposed not to be, but the point was the "I love mine" is the PUNCH LINE to the whole article, which up to that point is slagging off the whole concept as a waste of time and money.
Taking the short and snappy punchline "I love mine" and 'editing' it to the much more cumbersome and therefore (in my opinion) less funny "This Researcher loves his." tells you all you need to know about what the editors know about comedy. There you go, you can't have everything. I mean, where would you put it?

Yes, I take your point about the punchline - it did feel a bit cumbersome on first reading. Just another example of editorial heavy-handedness, I guess, although perhaps more a result of editorial policies than the fault of the individual sub-editor involved. Anyway, I did find the article funny, and that's what's important! Hope to see more soon,
Berek

I actually had to back and read the last line again because it made so little inmpression on me. I thihk the first version would have been better too.
Nice article H....

Thanks for the comments guys.
Two things:
1. DON'T blame the sub-editor. She let me see the entry after she'd finished subbing it, and the punchline was intact. I DON'T want to get on the wrong side of her by allowing the implication that ANYTHING was her fault, and neither should anyone else.
2. I'm on an Offical Warning for posting a joke, which one person got, and laughed at via the keyboard, and which disappeared within the hour because two (2) people yikesed it, and the complaint was upheld. Which tells you what you already knew about what the editors know about comedy. My sense of humour's going on sabbatical for a while, because it's liable to get me into trouble. We apologise for the inconvenience.

In point 2) are you saying that you got an official warning because someone laughed at a joke you posted?? How on earth can someone be offended by that?
Is it illegal to laugh or something?
That's a joke in itself.
