A Conversation for The Cranial Nerves
A Cranial Carol

Well done on a concise and well-written article. I wish my first year anatomy notes had read as well! I just thought I'd enclose a small excerpt from them, for those who want a summary to a well-known tune. Those who don't, tough.
On the first nerve of the cranium,
my true love gave to me:
My sense olfactory.
On the second nerve of the cranium,
my true love gave to me:
Two eyes a-looking,
And my sense olfactory.
On the third nerve of the cranium,
my true love gave to me:
Three cross-eyed glances,
Two eyes a-looking,
And my sense olfactory.
On the fourth nerve of the cranium,
my true love gave to me:
Four: oblique muscles,
Three cross-eyed glances,
Two eyes a-looking,
And my sense olfactory.
On the fifth nerve of the cranium,
my true love gave to me:
Mas-tica-tion!
Four sup. obliques,
Three crossed eyes,
Double vision,
And my sense olfactory.
On the sixth nerve of the cranium,
my true love gave to me:
Six sideways glances,
Mas-tica-tion! etc.
On the seventh nerve of the cranium,
my true love gave to me:
Seven funny faces,
Six sideways glances,
Mas-tica-tion! etc.
On the eighth nerve of the cranium,
my true love gave to me:
Eight sounds, and balance,
Seven funny faces,
Six sideways glances,
Mas-tica-tion! etc.
On the ninth nerve of the cranium,
my true love gave to me:
Nine bitter earaches,
Eight sounds, and balance,
Seven funny faces,
Six sideways glances,
Mas-tica-tion! etc.
On the tenth nerve, the vagus,
my true love gave to me:
Ten beats a minute,
Nine bitter earaches,
Eight sounds, and balance,
Seven funny faces,
Six sideways glances,
Mas-tica-tion! etc.
On the eleventh nerve of the cranium,
my true love gave to me:
Eleven heads a-tilting,
Ten beats a minute,
Nine bitter earaches,
Eight sounds, and balance,
Seven funny faces,
Six sideways glances,
Mas-tica-tion! etc.
On the twelfth nerve of the cranium,
my true love gave to me:
Twelve lovely lickings,
Eleven heads a-tilting,
Ten beats a minute,
Nine bitter earaches,
Eight sounds, and balance,
Seven funny faces,
Six sideways glances,
Mas-tica-tion! etc.
PS. The original last verse was, er, not suitable for publication under the House Rules from number eleven down. Ah, the famous medical student sense of humour. For those who /really/ want to know, you could feed the first line of the song into Google in quotes, but I wouldn't bother to be perfectly honest.

I should have had that for my last pre-clinicals
Do you know the mnenomic for the branches of the external carotid artery? That was a true case of med student humour...
for taking the time out to read my entry
