A Conversation for Tips for Buying a Computer

The problem with keeping up to date

Similar to my scary post on the "How to build a computer" article people really should avoiding publishing advice like this about computers. Whilst many of the principles remain applicable a lot of the detail becomes quickly obsolete (did someone really mention DOS in here? Its 2003 now guys and girls - last DOS release was nearly a decade ago).

I'd like to suggest that all articles providing advice which include computer specs should be banned unless the original author remains a regular user of h2g2 for life and promises to update their article every 3 months or so to keep it current forever and ever (amen).

I'm also not entirely sure of the technical contributions of some of these "techie" type articles. Maybe h2g2 should carry a disclaimer about "Not all our researchers are fully aware of all the facts they are trying to document" - or something similar - rather than "Don't blame the BBC, man"
