A slightly late addendum: for those of you going off to college with a new computer, get a DVD drive for it. If you already have a TV and VCR and DVD player and Playstation, it isn't necessary, but if the computer's all you have in the way of fancy electronics, it's well worth the investment if you ever want to stay home and watch a movie, either alone or with a special other person. CD burners are great, but chances are at least one of your friends will have one and you can bother tham until they agree to let you burn CDs from their machine.
On a completely unrelated note, I really dislike Windows XP. My geek (geekier than I am) friends all claim it's the best yet (talking about the corporate version) but it's completely incompatible with the other Windows OSes, has been less reliable for me than my ME machine (when ME is supposed to be evil), and is just in general obnoxious.
