In Scandinavia you do not have to tip at the restaurants. The price in the menu is the price you have to pay. When I grew up I was always told that it was bad manners to tip. It sends a signal that I consider you a servant and myself above your level. It is the restaurants responsibility to pay the waiters properly for the work they do. However, I think this attitude have changed a bit. I do not think that most waiters would be insultet to get a tip today. If you get really good service it is not uncommon to tip.

It has been my experience in the service industry that the sting inflicted by an "insulting" tip (overlarge or gratuitously bestowed) is easily assuaged by enjoying the spending, or saving of it.
