A Conversation for International Tipping Etiquette
The fear factor

I very much resent the atmosphere that tipping is expected in certain circumstances, regardless of whether or not it has been 'earned'. Being a bit of a wimp, I dislike the feeling that if I don't tip in these cases I might get a dirty look(or worse)from the person in question & would be afraid of revisitng the place in case of getting bad treatment as a remembered non-tipper!
I agree with the comment that everyone should receive a fair wage for their job - there should be scope for the employer to reward (financially or otherwise) a standard of work above that which is required, rather than the 'customer'. I think that verbal appreciation from a customer/patient/whatever is much more important than a cursory extra payment.
There is also an unpleasant aspect of 'class' - master & servant - where tipping is involved, particularly as those jobs traditionally tipped tend to be those requiring less skill/training. Let's respect everyone for their contributions to society by whatever job they do including those unpaid e.g. mothers/carers (another issue all on its own).
