A Conversation for International Tipping Etiquette

Tipping in Germany

Hmm

Here it seems to be 'the norm' to tipp in restaurants, rounding the price up to the next 5 DM or thereabouts, the same for pizza-delivery and the like.

I can't say I've ever tipped anyone else though, not in Hotels etc.

I used to get some though, on my paper delivery round in the UK, used to make quite a bit at christmas smiley - smiley

Tipping here seems strange to me. The people I expect to tip (loo attendants for e.g.) have a fixed price (50pfg) but hairdressers when I've tipped them and then asked for the name of the one who washed my hair so I can put a tip in their box/bag/thingy, have looked at me as though I was proprosing a revolution.

I almost never tip taxi drivers, since mostly they don't even open the door for me and the gruesomes. But I do leave a pressie for the bin men on the first collection after christmas. Despite my nagging suspicion that they earn more than me.

I was just thinking about that the other day.. That the loo attendents sit there with a dish of small change and look at you very wierdly if you don't put anything in it.. (Saw one in MacDs)

Taxi drivers I do tipp, rounding up to some sensible number.. Not that I use taxis very often smiley - smiley

Sometimes they don't let you in until you've paid! And once I had a near fight with one because she wanted 50pfg from each of me and my kids (3 and 4!)

I've never ever got up the courage (yet) to say "I'm not paying because these loos are filthy"

I never take taxis, but since I think they're relatively cheap I usually tip.

I've taken to chasing my hairwasher around the place to give him a tip. That's my excuse anyway!

Tipping in Germany is well observed, but most people I talk to about it says it doesn't really matter too much (unlike US).

This web link has the best advice, which I follow:
