Congratulations Swiv for producing such a thorough report on G & S! I am the furthest thing from an expert on the topic of their comic operas, but your work has brought back memories of my teen years when my school's drama teacher led the musically talented students through a G & S production every two years! He always felt the need to 'modernize' the productions however, which is why in our school's version of 'The Pirates of Penzance,' the pirates were members of a motorcycle gang! Luckily I was the Properties Manager for that production and not responsible for costumes. I don't know how they found leather biker-type jackets for half the cast!
