A Conversation for Applying to University

I went to Cambridge and had a great time. I think people imagine it to be be far more snobby and exclusive than it is. The traditional elements that survive are very much "opt-in", and I for one don't knock the opportunity to have a reasonable three-course meal served to you in an atmospheric hall 300 years old for only £5 - when you feel like it.

Spending three years in such beautiful surroundings is a big plus as well.

I kind of wish I had applied. I found out there are about 12 applicants for each space. I could have a chance there. I thought it was like 50 people for each spot. But of course I'd still have to find a way to pay for it.

I read that there were only four applicants per place at Cambridge, whereas 12 or 13 was quite high. Does anyone know for sure?

It all depends, I think. Bristol is supposed to have the highest number of applicants per place - for English, my course, I think it's a couple of thousand for about 72 places. But that's everybody - Oxford and Cambridge scare a sufficient number of people away and so the application rate is lower. That said, it can be a bit of a game - I got deeply scared by all the tall blonde Eton types in cord trousers of the 'Aged Dad' variety with enormous holdalls talking incessantly about rugby whilst at the station.

Was that at all relevant? I don't think so... smiley - silly

I'd like to go for astrophysics. And those two places have Penrose and Hawking and those other famous guys.

4 people? Damn.

My college has Hawking. In theory. Occasionally.
Not that I'm doing Physics... shame really.

Well, at least you can tell the time when there are no clouds. That's not much of a comfort in England is it... Especially when there are no mountains between you and Siberia.

I did sort of guess that. How is the siberian wind this time of year?

We had frost this morning, and it's only the middle of october. Definitely wooly hat and gloves weather.
