I have noticed that some of the "middle" pedals on uprights act to remove the dampers from the bass side of the piano. I suppose in context it can be used as a sostenuto in the sense that it will cause the bass strings to resonate sympathetically with the played treble strings, giving the effect of a sustained chord.
Also, where I come from, the "sustain" pedal is called the gas pedal in certain circles.
