Sostenuto on uprights commonly interpose a cloth in front of all the dampers, giving a very tight, quiet sound, and can be used for night or quiet playing. Using it makes you have to press almost twice as hard to get as loud as pressing without the sos pedal depressed.

What you've just described is not the sostenuto pedal. Not all pianos have this pedal. Only the very very best uprights (and most expensive) and grand pianos are equipped with the sostenuto pedal. Unless you order an upright to be customised with one.

I know. I'm just saying that the pedal that should act as sostenuto on an upright does what i've described.
