A great game to play with this type of letter box is to push the mail halfway in and wait.
After a short pause, you will usually hear the dog barking - wait a bit long.
When you feel the dog bite the mail (as it usually does) pull quickly back on the mail until you hear a comforting THUMP against the door.
Then ram the mail back through the box and escape at full speed. 
This has two results. In 60% of cases, the dog does not attempt to grab the mail again. In the remain cases, the dog finds a way out and lies in wait for you - turning the box into "letter box with dog outside".
