A Conversation for How Not to Name Children

Rejected names

It would be interesting to have people list names that were considered, then rejected when the parents realized what that name might bring about.

I'm not married (yet), but ever since I knew a guy in college named Gabriel, I've wanted to name a son that. It's a name, not a noun, and can be shortened to Gabe relatively inoffensively. My fiance's family has a middle name for a son that I believe is used traditionally every second generation, Amandus, which I've always liked too.

After a long time of having Gabriel Amandus as a possible name to bestow on a (future) son, we realized that would give him the initials G.A.S., which is probably asking for trouble. So when the time comes, we'll have to use one or the other. Alas.

Anyone else have any names that were proposed and then stopped by cooler thinking?

My parents were advised by friends to name me Larry Curly Moes, or Coz Moes. They eventually settled on Nathaniel Keenan Moes.

I'm glad.

Apparently, it was suggested by my fiancee's grandparents that she should be named after her father (Tom) and be called Thomasina. She now thanks God that her mum didn't get on with the in-laws! It was also a good move on mum's part to get married and take her husband's name, otherwise I'd have been getting married to a Freak.
