Going back 30 years, a schoolmaster who taught me virtually nothing else of any use referred to apostrophes as 'tombstones' for lost letters. I often think of him when I see what are colloquially called Grocers' apostrophes, e.g. a kilo [in these metric days] of apple's!
Do any other researchers have similar memories?
