I just went with the blunt approach. My eldest (now 21) never really asked questions and seemed to want to avoid the topic altogether when she was in her pre-teens so I would wait until I had her in the car and then use the lyrics of songs to lead into dicussion (thank you Madonna). She was then a captive audience and couldn't make an excuse to get away. I used proper terminology and didn't go into birds and bees stuff. I made sure she knew she could always come to me with questions and not have to worry about a lecture. I also made sure she knew sex isn't dirty.
Now, the younger daughter (now 17) wanted all the details at about age 5. She got them, too. I am very relieved that she wasn't at all concerned or embarrassed when a condom fell out of her bag recently.

Well done, I hope that we are as sensible when the time comes. Our son is only 3 yrs old right now so we have a few years yet.
I'm sure it will arise fairly soon. We are planning another pregnancy in the next 12 months and he still sleeps with us in a Family Bed.
We also have a number of gay and bisexual friends so his experience of relationship role models will be broard to say the least
