try Ngaio Marsh, an excellent NZ author who is reasonably easy to get in the UK I've heard - she died in 1985 but has a big series of books about her "gentleman" detective Alleyn which it seems you can read in any order
well i like them anyway 
Surfeit of Lampreys is my favourite so far
