I read this today... hard sf is the real ale of the science fictin genre: an acquired taste, doesn't keep well, and when it's bad, it's dreadful.
It failed to mention whether or not hard sf is generally the preserve of overweight men with beards.
I also read this, in the same mag: accepted definition of hard sf: "real science and a scrupulous avoidance of technobollocks".
I think I'd quite like a pair of technobollocks. When Sony bring them out, I'll be down to Dixons like a shot!
