The George Efinger book mentioned above is one I happen to have a copy of and I can happily say that it is one of the best things I have ever read and I recommend everybody to scour the internet and second hand bookshops to find a copy as soon as they can.

Ah, another Effinger fan, eh? Glad to see you enjoyed that book as well.
I don't know if I'd call it one of the "best things I've ever read," but it's definitely excellent, and well worth the time it takes to track down a copy and buy it. It's been about two years since the last time I thumbed through it, but I still find myself just shouting the phrase "Morgrom the palindromic, whose name is the same forwards as it is in reverse!"
I doubt that's exactly what it said in the book, but I know that a similar line is in there somewhere....and people give you the strangest looks when you just shout something like that....
But still, very enjoyable. Most people looking at this article don't even notice anything but the games, I've found.

Bizarrely I read the book first and then went, oh, so its based on a game, lets have a look on net... Now I have 1, 2, 3, 0, Beyond, Nemesis and Undiscovered. And Bureaucracy but thats another story. But still very very good. Took me 2 weeks to beat.

Yes, Bureaucracy is very good. Penned by U42 himself, you know. He also helped to write Infocom's Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy text game, which was co-written by Steve Meretzky (who wrote Sorcerer and Zork Zero, along with many other fine games).
I recommend pretty much any game that comes from Infocom. Well,....not Shogun. I don't recommend that. But any game aside from that I highly recommend.

We know, it tells you when you start
Isnt it nice in this world where the internet finally has a use, and that is to get the entire Infocom back catalogue?
No more porn, just endless Push llama off shelf..
Beautiful.
