Windows' Internet Connection Sharing

Post 1

Ausnahmsweise, wie üblich (Consistently inconsistent)

Windows' Internet Connection Sharing is only available on Windows 98 (Second Edition), Windows 2000 and Windows Me I think. It's not a down-loadable add on either. It's either built in or not there. I have Windows NT and ICS is not available.

I have a question too. I log on to a domain. What repercussions does that have for networking and the other machines on my home network?

It depends on the domain policies. If you've been locked into a domain by your admins you'll have to exercise some ingenuity to connect to local file shares, but IP connections are independent of the domain settings so you'd still be able to share an internet connection.

Internet connection sharing is sort of supported in NT. In the Advanced properties for TCPIP you can enable IP Forwarding. You can also install Routing and Remote Access on NT Server, but this is very unstable in my experience.

Simpler overall to use some low-cost proxy server software like WinGate which will run on NT Workstation (and Win95 and most other things).

Hi Just zis Guy (you're turning up everywhere!),

Thanks. I actually got a trial copy of WinGate last week. I think that's the way I'll go. I'm not allowed to put WinGate on corporate assets though (I uase my company notebook at home most of the time), so I'll make my Win 95 machine the gateway.

That's the smart move anyhow, as I presume the Win95 PC is the one which is always present at home.
