You can also have the shepherds stick with a curved handle for rescuing sheep, you can grow sticks with curved handles by some strange root pinning technique.
I've got a stick with a natural spiral up it- only honeysuckle growing up it does this (well in the uk anyway- dunno if some other plant elsewhere does the same thing!).
Hazel, Ash and Blackthorn are the most common wood to use in the UK.

Oh, is that what the curvy bit on the shepherd's stick is for? I never knew. Good thing I didn't write an entry on shepherding...

and for a comfortable grip. so how come so many old folks have curvy sticks, did all old people used to be shepherds?

I blame vaudeville. That curvy bit is actually something of a pain to hold, but it fits nicely around most human necks.
