A Conversation for Walking Sticks
What about aluminium?

Just like there are aluminium baseball bats, there are metal hiking sticks. These generally cost a fair bit, are collapsable (which comes in very handy when scrambling but you don't need the stick), and are quite sturdy. The one I have was made in Austria for REI.

I wish I could say I excluded "metal sticks" on purpose for being an oxymoron... but I just didn't think of metal sticks while writing the entry. One other reviewer did think of them, but the Guide engines don't have a good way of telling me when I have a comment on an article I write.

I use two extendable aluminium walking sticks for climbing mountains. They make it much easier and safer descending steep slopes or following a difficult contour.
