A Conversation for Primary and Secondary Radar

Sir Kitt

I have update this submission following some of the comments above. The peace is intended to give very general overview of the basic concept of radar as most people understand it. I deliberately did not want to get into technical discussions about pulse repetition frequencies and the like, or indeed other uses for radar. It is intended for general consumption and not just for those with technical background or specific interest in radar.

If you're not going to discuss radar's uses, then it isn't a very good overview, is it? People are familiar with police radars, and they are familiar with military uses, from the movies if from nowhere else. This article is very airport specific. If that's all you want to discuss, then that's fine, but the title of the article should reflect that.

Incidentally, your "secondary radar" (I must admit I've never heard that term before) is not only used for airplanes. IFF (Identification Friend or Foe) works on the same principle. And you're missing an area that could best be described as "passive radars"... which are outside your chosen scope, as they are only used in military applications.

That's why I am suggesting the University project smiley - smiley

The Silent Sentry (passive) radar plus the whole multistatic future deserves mention, and even if one stays clear of formulas and equation there is still enough stuff for a project. However, an entry named 'How to defeat police radar' might probably not go online despite 100s of people wanting it smiley - winkeye

Of course, history started millions of years ago, with bats !

Perhaps not, but an article on police use of radar would still be a useful addition, in my opinion.

So why are we still just talking about a University project? smiley - winkeye

The problem is that it's very difficult to defeat police radar. With the instant on button, the only thing that a radar detector will do is confim that the police actually got you, and not someone else.

I never had a ticket before I had a radar detector, and I haven't had one since I got rid of it.

I have started the RADAR Project Page [http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/A591031]. I don't know that much about RADAR aside from the speed detection equipment. So obviously I need people to sign on over there.

Once we see how much we have to work with, we can submit the Project to the powers that be.

Sam

Hello friends! Semple, here. :-) This entry on RADAR by the estimable Sir Kitt was picked by an equally estimable Scout. Unfortunatley, the entry was picked while only two days old in PR! (Scouts should wait at least a week before they pick stuff for recommendation.) Also, Sir Kitt, as you are most likely now aware, we have a nascent University project on RADAR. I was wondering whether or not you fine people could come to some amicable agreement (perhaps a collaboration?) concerning this subject. Can I also point you, Sir Kitt, to the following threads which take you to the Uni project on RADAR and to a posting that Chris has made today concerning the duplicate entries. http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/A591031 http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/F72078?thread=127340&post=1130764#p1130764 Let me know your thoughts. Best wishes, Sam. :-)

Sir Kitt

I wrote this piece as a stand alone entry and if it stay that way, well that's fine. On the other hand if it can become part of the University project that would be good too. My problem is I don't know how, or if it's even possible, to go about moving it from peer review to University project.

That's no problem at all. A Scout (like me) will have this thread moved to the entry, and you sign up to the Project - bingo smiley - smiley

In Germany, we presently witness a debate over damage possibly done by RADAR. The Yellow Press claims that RADAR causes cancer. Do you have any info on that issue, and if so, would you want to include that into the article?

Editorial Note: This conversation has been moved from 'Peer Review' to 'RADAR'.

Hi folks,

This thread has now been moved back out of Peer Review, as the author would like to include it in the University Project about RADAR that's also just started up.

Look forward to seeing the finished product of your collaboration. smiley - smiley

hi Yelbakk smiley - smiley

I have still hopes to find enough *substantial* stuff on that, for another entry at http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/A595046 (radiation hazards) which is still somewhat rudimentary.
