Here in the United States, homosexuality has long been used as a hot button issue to bring religious conservatives to the polls. Many states have passed laws - in some case, multiple laws - declaring that same sex marriage will receive no legal recognition there. Where laws are written so broadly as to make little sense, they are struck down by the courts. And of course, this allows lawmakers to reuse the issue again.
Arizona was recently the first state to defeat such a gay marriage referendum. In part, the law was rejected because it forbid ANY type of recognition of gay marriage. Read broadly enough, this would seem to include not only theoretical civil unions but unofficial ceremonies and the voluntary extention of employee benefits to same-sex partners.
One person protesting in front of a polling place put it thusly:
"Can *I* vote on *your* marriage?"
