A Conversation for 'Fishing with John' - The TV Show

A great little article. I've heard of this, but all I knew about it was the premise. You should really check out Tom Waits and John in Jarmusch's "Down by Law". One of the great prison movies! BTW, has "Fishing with John" ever been shown on British TV? Is it available on video?

There is only one thing worse than being Gosho, and that is not being Gosho

Holy cow, a simulpost in two different conversations of the same forum, both with mentions of Tom Waits smiley - yikes What are the chances of that happening?

Well, Tom Waits is one cool cat...

Anyhow, thanks for the suggestion. I actually wrote another article on Jim Jarmusch that's making its way through the process now, but I must admit I've only seen bits of "Down by Law", and not the whole thing.

It is out on video and DVD, but I'm not sure if it's available in Britain yet. The DVD maker (Criterion) does make rather nice DVDs, and you might be able to find copies somewhere.

Yours,
Jake

Down By Law gets shown on British tv every once in a blue moon. First time I saw it was on Alex Cox's Moviedrome on BBC2. Alex must be a fan of Tom Waits too because I remember seeing quite a few films with TW in (DBL, The Outsiders, Rumblefish) or writing the music for (One From The Heart). I don't know if DBL is out on DVD anywhere yet, but I'm sure it must be available on VHS in Britain.

Was that the Alex Cox, director of Repo Man, Sid and Nancy, etc?

Hello,

I should mention that in my posting further up, I was mentioning that "Fishing with John" is on DVD or 3 videotapes. The local video store has "Down by Law", I just have to rent it.

Yours,
Jake

Yeah, that's him. He used to have a series, well... sort of, on late night Sunday BBC2 called Moviedrome. They'd show a 'cult' film like Down By Law, Repo Man, Paris Texas, Wise Blood (get the idea?), and he would do a 5-10 minute intro about the movie, the director, the plot, etc. I think it ran from mid to late 80's. It was the perfect way to round off a weekend smiley - smiley

Cool. I have a soft spot in my heart for Repo Man and Straight to Hell.
