How could you have forgotten about bicycles?! Lots and lots and lots of transportation in the Netherlands takes place by bike. I've just entered my article about cycling in the netherlands into h2g2, to make up for this omission: http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/alabaster/A976980

I completely agree with you. Bikes are the most reliable and handy way of transportation in Holland. Especially because you don't even need to take your own bike everywhere. If you look for it, you will always find a bike to go home after every party.
Just a remark on the article: Utrecht doesn't have a subway/metro
