There were _no_ blue smarties until this advertising campaign. I think this was because of the problem of finding a usable blue dye that was only solved comparatively recently.

Not entirely true...
There were blue smarties available in some other countries, before the UK had the chance to sample them - but they were a different shade too.
I once had some of the old, foreign blues - (I kept some for years) and they were a pale 'sky-blue'; whereas the newer UK blues are more turquoise in colour.
