If there was a number for which the system didn't work, there would actually be an infinite number of numbers for which the sequence didn't work.
Take your number that doesn't work. Doubly it. This number also won't work. Double it again. This number also won't work.
While they won't be very dense there should be a proliferation of them in the number line.
I've been working backwards. Start at 1 and try and prove you can create every number by using the rules in the correct situation. Having to be very careful but it's working fine so far. Only infinitely many to go
P.S. I'm a Maths student so please don't take the last bit seriously.

It only takes one example of it not working to disprove something. If you can find that example, then you win the £1000 or whatever it is. You can't prove something by trying every possible number, you have to use algebra or something.
