Blues Shark - For people who like this sort of thing, then this is just the sort of thing they'll like

As a lifelong Asterix fan, I'd just like to say that this was a fascinating article to read, although I must say some of the finer linguistic points are waaaay over my head. smiley - smiley

And it renewed my lifelong admiration for Bell and Hockridge, who did a magnificent job with the translation.

I was determined to point out some phrases from Asterix in Britain but you seem to have a good idea what's what, what? (incidentally, in Roman times, England didn't exist, so you can't really complain about their using Britain).

Point taken on England, Bagpuss. I guess that was just my anti-London sentiment talking- (why can't people visit the other bits?) smiley - smiley
Even so, they could have called it Asterix and the Britons or something...

As in Astérix chez les Bretons?

For a worse example, did you see the Pinky & the Brain about cheeses from around the world? They gave Wensleydale a top hat, monocle and very posh voice. I mean *Wensleydale*, not exactly from the home counties is it?

That's what I mean, the French title had it exactly right, but the translated version seemed more inaccurate smiley - smiley

As for Wensleydale, it shall forever be personified by Wallace in my mind smiley - biggrin

I'm prpared to forgive Pinky his eccenticities on cheese because Pinky and the Brain remains a gem. And besides, Brain's companion piece, "Parts of the Brain" is a riot. smiley - biggrin
