Barnacle and Hell are working together on entries for other parts of Brasil. Any thoughts are welcome here for an entry on Salvador.

OK. Here some facts to start:

Salvador, Bahia, Brazil

Latitude 12°58'11S
Longitude 30°28'46W
Time-Zone: GMT -3
Altitude 8,3m
Population: 2.2 Million (1993)
Directly on the coast, capital of the state of Bahia (which means Bay)
People from there call themselves: soteropolitanos
Salvador means (Savior, the city was named that way because of religious motivation)

Historical:
City was erected in 1549 by Tomé de Souza the Portuguese governor-general as a portuary main city, and as a starting point to explore the inlands of the region. It was also the first capital of the colony of Brazil. In the 17th century it was attacked by the English and Dutch (which were repelled by the Portuguese). In 1798 an independence revolt by the name of 'Conjuração Baiana' took place (which was repelled by the Portuguese) mainly in Salvador. Other separationist movements were suffocated the last one in 1912 which ended with the bombardment of the city.

Capoeira is not -- I should think -- connected to Salvador, and would be worth an entry per se (certainly not written or researched by me)

Just noted in the PR... There is already a - in my view - excellent entry on capoeira. Currently being reviewed.
