It is a little known fact that the last Natural Cement to be produced, and among the first discovered, in the UK, was manufactured in Harwich. It was often termed Roman Cement for no apparent reason, and was a material somewhere between a hydraulic lime and an early Portland Cement. It was originally made from cement-stones, i.e. limestone rocks that contained some clay, found on the shoreline at Harwich, and burnt in Lime kilns. It was much used to produce the stucco on Georgiam buildings, for example in London's Regents Park, and continued to be used for this and similar purposes right up to the 1950's. You will be relieved to hear that I don't know much more about it than that, but if you want to know more about Natural Cements generally.... How strange, no-one is listening any more!
Anyway, good entry. Thanks.
