A Conversation for County Wexford, Ireland
Sand Banks

Here's a question that has been bugging me for a while.
Old maps of Ireland consistently show that massive sand banks existed a few miles off the coast of Wexford. These banks appear to have been above sea level. Now, they are gone, or appear to be gone according to modern maps.
What happened? Where did they go? Are they still there? What are they called?
Actually that's four questions. Ho hum.

The biggest sand bank is now attached to the mainland and is Raven Point, the southernmost tip of Curracloe Beach. This was a separate island up to about 200 years ago. According to the warden of the Wildfowl Reserve, the sand in and around Wexford Harbour changes from week to week. It is possible that the sand banks are still there but only appearing occasionally.
