h2g2 The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: Earth Edition

This nature reserve is on the end of the Dublin Port breakwater, on the south side of the river (just behind the massive power station with the red and white chimneys). You can get to it from the beech at Sandymount.

Even though I only live 15 minutes walk away from it I didn't realise it existed. It is a fabuluous place to unwind - the air scented with wild peas and the quiet burble of the waves in the bay below.

There's a very nice walk from there out along the South Wall, which is the long pier that forms the southern boundary of the Liffey estuary. You can go right out to the Poolbeg lighthouse, which is much further than it looks. The path is quite uneven and is unlit, so don't do it at night without a torch. The view of the bay from the lighthouse is spectacular at night.

They are putting a pipeline in from there to near Howth so that walk involves crossing a distinctly rickety looking bridge at the moment.
