How do you define dead?

Does the 1 in 1,000,000,000 chance of contamination work out at as about 1 in 4 for each year of its existence?

My "understanding" is that 'dead' is a one-way thing i.e. if it is alive now then it was never dead...ymmv.

I agree, in a way, but it sort of means you can never declare anything to be dead unless it has been so forever.
