Editors: Could you change the second sentence in the first paragraph under the title 'Baby Democracy' thus (as requested by the researcher):
From
"While the rich people could have a say in how the city would be governed, and there was still a large tribute to be paid to the lords, their grip on the cities was loosening."
To
"On the one hand, there were citizens with a say in how their city was governed, yet on the other, there was still a large tribute to be paid to the lords. The grip of the latter was, however, was weakening."
Thanks

What a good article. It never dawned on me where the bourgoisie came from, or indeed how to spell them Very informative.

Agreed. But speaking of spelling, at the end of the "Baby Democracy" section it says "They were citizens in England, burgers in Holland..."
Don't you mean burghers? Or did s have political significance?

I'm afraid we call them burgers today, Ormy.
In the old days it would have been burghers, I think.
But the bourgeoisie isn't dead, so I referred to them with their name of today.

And the link to Greek Founding Fathers. Whoever added it: Very snazzy.
