This is just so obvious but the amount of times that I haven't read the question doesn't bare thinking about. If there is a bit of information in the question, such as; 'compound xv is toxic in large quantities', or 'the character of Jane is twenty years old in chapter three', then you must at least consider the fact that theese things may be inportant.

Take the word of someone who forgot this in their last exam and missed a very easy mark because of it. Even if the info is not important if you include it in an appropriate place you might at least get some credit for having read and understood the question.

BUT

don't fall into the trap of repeating the question or getting misled. This could loose you marks.

Now I'm confused.

I hate exams.

Why am I trying to go *back* to University?!

And another thing:

If you know you have a minute per mark or something (this is wuite common with short anmswer science papers) then try to stick to this time. There is no point spending twenty minutes working out something worth five marks then getting to the end of the exam and dropping marks because you haven't had time to finish or didn't check the paper through to make sure you have added units to everything etc. Do the things you can wiz through first. Even if it is only ten percent iof the paper. At least it's done and out of the way.

And make sure you have read the whole paper. Can you imagine how awful you would feel if you get to hand in the paper then realised there was something written on the back!

I couldn't agree more - I have dropped umpteen marks by not reading the question correctly. It does sound like a stupid thing to say, but you MUST read every question thoroughly. Misreading or not reading just one word may make the question sound entirely different from what it actually is. You won't get marks for answering the question in the wrong way, even if your answer is perfect!
