Are the European ones still compulsory?

I thought that the EU sticker now replaced most of the EU stickers and that number plates now often had them as part of the plate (I see Irish cars with EU number plates from time to time).
Wasn't it the rule at one time that you were menat to take off the GB sticker within a period of being home?
Are the European ones still compulsory?

I don`t know if this is true for all cars in europe, but Hungarian cars have an H in their number plates, but we once got stopped at the border because we didnt have an H sticker on the car.
