there is a good article came out in 2007 that explains why shaghbarks are not seen in Europe.

It still doesn't explain why the trees prefer hilly slopes and are not seen along the gulf of Mexico. There must be something about the climate there that is not conducive to this species.
It is also a worry whether global warming will push the trees farther north so southern appalachia will stop having shagbark trees.

Also a distribution map shows that shagbarks do not prosper west of the Great Plains. Rocky Mountain states like Colorado or Wyoming don't have them, possibly for the same reason that they don't appear in Europe(inability to stay ahead of the glaciers).
