A Conversation for Dick Dale - King of the Surf Guitar

I meant to make these first two comments before, but didn't get the chance before the merger happened, and I have one more slight comment for the Moderators/Editors/Subeditors/Subsubs...

I should have clarified for those that don't know who he was, that Gene Krupa was one of the first and most widely-known jazz drummers in the USA. He was flambouyant and very highly skilled, with a notable tendency to do his own thing (which irritated some of his band leaders). This is what is meant by Dale having a "Gene Krupa-like" strumming style - fast, flambouyant, almost obnoxious at times. It's all part of the show for these guys. No big deal, it's just that a friend of mine read in real life read the entry and thought I was implying that Gene Krupa was a guitarist.

The last paragraph of the edited entry has a small typo in the 2nd-to-last sentence: "It is strongly recommended that if you lives ..." should of course read "It is strongly recommended that if you live ...". This is probably from my confusion of where to use the word "one" and where to use "you." I try, but I am still schooled as an Engineer, and inevitably I make grammatical errors - this one apparently got by the editors, heh.

Finally, the usage of the term for Dick Dale's fans (I won't repeat it here in case it is deemed offensive) is not intended in it's possible derogotory connotations, but as a silly moniker that is in actual use by fans of Dick Dale. There certainly may be an issue with its use here, in which case I have no objections to it being removed from the article.

Gilgamesh of Uruk

I think I recall another eccentric Krupa style - didn't he play piano with Hamp (Lionel Hampton, another Jazz percussion giant)using just 1 finger of each hand each, as if sharing a vibraphone?

That would be entirely possible, though I don't know about it. I thought Hamp just did that anyway. smiley - winkeye
