You may also want to mention that the piano was originally called the pianoforte, because of its ability to play both soft (piano) and loud (forte) notes. A technological breakthrough, the piano was the first keyed instrument which responded to touch by changing its volume; the harder you press a key, the louder the note. Older keyboard instruments (such as the harpsichord and clavichord) sound all their notes at a uniform volume.
