The bandanna has more recently been adopted by scallies who wear them with lots of hair gel and butterfly clips. The bandanna must be worn carefully as it really does not suit some people.

And also in Australia are used as a big fundraiser for the charity "Canteen" (which helps kids with cancer). They are sold for $2AU and have a special day (27th November) on which they are to be worn. I think it originated from children with cancer wearing bandannas to hide their hair loss.
