Just remembered an interesting insight form a trainig course I was on some years back.
To form a habit you have to do the thing for 21 days without a break. If you blow it even once, you have to start again at day 1. This applies to diets especially.
Giving something up is the same - you actually have to get into the habit of *not* doing the thing (like eating crisps on the sofa watching TV). 21 days, and if you break the rules, go back to square 1.
Not sure how it fits in with an exercise programme, but the evidence looks like 21 days again - which may mean six or more weeks, if you are going every other day. 21 visits, then. Most people sem to give up after between 10 and 14, so I think that's probably right.

Makes me think of positive habits that must be deliberately chosen and done consistently with purpose in mind - and those that are picked up and maintained out of laziness.
