One way of avoiding the famine response noted inthe entry is to vary the calorie intake on alternate days -on up days eat normally, on down days reduce calorie intake as much as you can comfortably (the aim is for about a quarter of normal intake eg 500 calories if 2000 is what you estimate are needed for your bodyweight). This has the strong additional benefit that the stress of being on a reduced calorie diet is limited to a day at a time - you just need to ask yourself whether you have the will power to put off the until tomorrow.
