A Conversation for The Paoli Massacre

Paoli

A very special place. If by special you mean exactly like every other suburb in America. I know, I live there... the site of the Massacre is actually nowadays outside Paoli, in what's called Wayne. Named after guess who.

Obviously, you don't travel 2 miles from your home in Paoli to the site of the battle. If you did, you'd know the town is MALVERN, not WAYNE! (Wayne is in the opposite direction from Paoli--east, not west!)

The original article also contains inaccuracies, such as Grey's troops numbering 5,000, taken from old legends. It's known from muster rolls, etc., that the attacking force numbered about 1,200. An excellent book called Battle of Paoli was published by Thomas J. McGuire in the year 2000.

BTW, the battlefield is partly preserved, thanks to a great effort by the local people of Malvern and the surrounding area, rallying support from even the federal government. Try taking a walk on the history trail and see the mass grave of the 53 Americans killed and read the really interesting inscription placed in 1817 by veterans who were mad at the British at that time not only for the "unfortunate incident at Paoli" but also for the more recent War of 1812 and burning of the White House.
