A Conversation for Battle of the Barrels
Early Submarine

I caught part of a show about an early submarine that was used by the Americans to attack British ships. I didn't hear if it was during the revolution or the War of 1812. Apparently it was a barrel like affair. One person inside paddled to a ship. The goal was to get underneath of it, and then drill a hole in the bottom, and attach a mine.
From what I gather, the drill bit stuck. The submariner had to swim for his life to esacpe the revenge of the British.
Have you heard of that one?

I'm thinking it was in New York Harbor during the Revolution but I don't recall much about it other than the image of the guy in the barrel...
Naval history is something I'm horrible with. Give me a good land battle any day.

A full scale model of that early barrel submarine is on display in the Intrepid museum (that's the WWII aircraft carrier on Manhattan East side)
