h2g2... Looking to the Future
Created | Updated Jun 20, 2003
Christmas is looming and 'The Millennium' is coming upon us at an alarming rate. It is time to look to the future.Over 30,000 User Pages in the realm of h2g2 and growing. Not a bad achievement, over the period of just over 8 months. It maybe a million or more by this time next year! 'The Village' has already grown into a small town. I can see, with more 'promotions' that are on the way, that the site will become more hectic, and the town of h2g2 will become a City!
The h2g2 team listened very closely at the beginning (Glad to say
that 'they still do') and the format and the required style of
writing has changed dramatically since the early days. For the
better, I think! Many of the SubEds are reporting that it is
becoming more and more difficult to reject articles. If the writing
is improving - the amount of accepted articles are not. Perhaps in
the New Year an increase to ten articles a day should be considered.
With the growing numbers of 'newbies', the waiting time for an
article to be read is bound to increase.
The speed that h2g2 works has always been a contention... especially in the forums. Because of the way it works... updating many data-files as it does, do we really have to return to a forum, once we have made a posting? After all, we will only see the posting we have just made. When the forum grows, it takes so long to re-download it before we can move on to our next posting.
When speaking to Jim Lynn last Month, (by forum) I put forward a
suggestion that only the last four or five postings would show,
with an option to read all it, if required. I think that the idea
had already crossed his mind, but he reported that the
technicalities of producing the option button were holding the
project back.
There are whispers in the corridors of Power that a major revamp is on the way...perhaps some of these issues will be addressed. We
will have to wait and see, as the h2g2 team are keeping things very
close to their chests. Whatever happens, I know that h2g2 will grow
and I for one will want to be around to see it.
