A Conversation for Cicadas
Missing footnote
Salamander the Mugwump Started conversation Nov 14, 2000
Hi again Pseudemys
There's a little bit missing from this old version of the cicada article. I wrote a footnote a few weeks ago regarding the "17-year locusts" in the quote you've headed "A Typical Brood". In the current, unedited version it's footnote number 9. This is what it says:
"Cicadas are not locusts and are not closely related to them. Cicadas belong to the order Hemiptera whereas locusts belong to the order Orthoptera. Cicadas are often confused with locusts because of their habit of erupting from the earth in huge numbers like a swarm or plague of locust. Locusts are in fact members of the grasshopper family."
Also, footnote number 1 is slightly different: "Bugs are the insects that belong to the order Hemiptera, which is divided into the sub-orders Heteroptera and Homoptera."
Thank you for your kind attention.
Sal
