Isn´t there some biblical thing about eating cicadas? I believe it was in the diet laws of moses, but I don´t recall whether they were prohibited or not. I think some species were, others weren´t (just guessing really!).
Can you eat a cicada? Do they taste good? Can you eat the whole thing? Are there some species you should avoid?
Come on, there has to be some survivalist types out there who can answer me

If you insist. Read this article, "Small Food" by Loonytunes.

See particularly under the heading "Popular Worldwide". Loony says the Japanese like them fried.
Don't know about your bible question but I wonder if you might be getting them mixed up with locusts, to which they are not very closely related.

That was a very cool entry, thanks for the link! Yes... Cicadas, locusts, grasshoppers... English is not my mother tounge so I don't really know the difference, I just figured insects in big swarms would be something like locusts.
"Leviticus 11:22 'These of them you may eat: the locust in its kinds, and the devastating locust in its kinds, and the cricket in its kinds, and the grasshopper in its kinds."
Absurd?
