A Conversation for Cicadas
Cicadas

I loved this article. It was very comprehensive. But I have some questions. I live in N Cyprus where last year we had a severe drought. This summer we have a plethora of cicadas. Are the two phenomena related? Yr article gave me the impression that the cicada nymphs 'hatch' at the optimum moment. This led me to assume that this year's hatchlings have seized the moment because the birds that normally eat them are fewer, having been killed off by lat year's drought. Then again, it might be the other way around: because there are fewer birds, (and foxes, rats, etc) more cicadas remain uneaten. One has just flewn into my kitchen (11.30pm) where it lay stunned, and then spinning, on the floor. This is highly unusual. I have released it outside. Any feedback, please, on the sudden plentiful population of cicadas?
