A Conversation for The Smiths - the Band

Good stuff!

What an excellently written entry - ever considered a career in pop journalism (!?!). Seriously, though, it's been ages since I listened to The Smiths but this insightful text has inspired me to go dust off The Queen is Dead. Sadly my turntable is being fixed at the moment so I'll have to stick to the only Smiths CD I've got - Louder Than Bombs.

I remember hearing a rather bizarre rumour at the time of the band's split: NME (I think) reported that Morrissey was considering joining Frankie Goes To Hollywood (who had also just split) as singer/lyricist. Do you know if there was a shred of truth to this?

smiley - laugh That sounds like one of the NME's little jokes to me, although the idea of Moz singing 'Relax' is rather appealing! smiley - biggrin

I'm really glad that you liked the Entry. smiley - ok Are you working on any more music Entries yourself?

Good stuff!

Hmmm, maybe you're right about the story. Mind you, I could imagine Morrissey singing some of the lesser-known tracks on Frankie's second LP. It's an intriguing idea.

I've currently got two entries in mind: The Police and New Order - both bands deserve a mention in the guide but at the moment neither have one. After that, I don't know. The Dead Kennedys also deserve an entry but I'd have to do a fair bit of research for that one.

And yourself? Have you given up writing about music? (Not that I exclude The Smiths and The Beautiful South from that category.)

I still get to do the occasional review for the Dotmusic website, but I don't really want to be a full-time music journalist at the age of 41. I am, however, going to do an Entry on PJ Harvey when I get the chance, because I've always loved her music and it would be quite timely now that she's won the Mercury Music Prize.

Either The Police or New Order would make great subjects for Entries. There are good stories to tell about both bands' careers! But you needn't worry about doing that research on The Dead Kennedys. Someone else has had a similar idea: http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/A623684 - and I think Kheldar's done a great job!

Indeed, I spotted Kheldar's Jello entry a couple of days ago, and I agree in that it's an excellent entry - far more informed than anything I could have done. I've offered to co-write a DK entry with Kheldar but to be honest I think I'd be very much the minor party in any collaboration so maybe I'll just leave it up to him.

PJ Harvey would be a good subject - fairly successful but still a relative unknown. I'll keep an eye out for it and hope that it's as good as your Bradford entry. I always meant to go across to the museum of film and television (if that's it's name) when I lived in Manchester. I never did, though, and now I live 300 miles away. Still, one day...
